Main Research Interests
Proteostasis is a fragile equilibrium between properly folded proteins and the removal or refolding of improperly folded ones. It is achieved by a complex network of molecular chaperones, the ubiquitin-proteasome system, autophagy systems and protein aggregation. The ability to maintain protein homeostasis is one of the first physiological functions to decline during aging. The failure to prevent and counteract proteotoxicity with age renders old organisms hypersensitive to proteotoxic stress,
and results in age-related diseases.
Our main goal is to find new ways to improve
healthspan and proteostasis.
Leading Projects
•Molecular dissection of stress responses in aging animals.
•Genetic and pharmacological factors that remodel proteostasis in the old.
•Improved proteostasis as a driver of longevity and healthspan.
•Non-canonical roles of the ER stress response.
•Development of tools to assess protein folding in
live animals.
